Bitty Knit

Here is what I am working on right now, a little tiny thing. I started this two days ago and I'll post more about this project another day. It's so bitty I thought it would go really fast, but let's take a look at the numbers because I feel like making this into a simple math problem...

That is 126 stitches to a row and thirteen rows per inch on number threes. Finished it's about 9 or 10 inches tall and a bit wider at one end. Hmm, jumping ahead, there are probably over twenty thousand stitches in this little garment, at about 30 stitches a minute, and yes, I am a slow knitter, and yes that probably is an extremely optimistic estimate. (That's a rough guess based on knitting while in waiting rooms and riding in the car and watching TV, with some frogging for dropped stitches.)

That's just under 12 hours of knitting total, not including finishing and blocking (If my logic checks out, so no guarantees there.) At a bigger gauge it could be half as many stitches and a two day project tops, but this is probably a good week of knitting in little snatches here and there. I know, if you're not already a knitter, nothing will tempt you like 12 hours to end up with something just bigger than a washcloth, right?

Now if I was getting paid for knitting, can you imagine what this bitty thing would cost? This all strikes me as pretty funny. And I can't tell you how much I am enjoying a little mindless garter stitch with no counting as I go.

If you want to see a real knitting math problem, see what the Yarn Harlot is contemplating today.
